Corporal Lima, of the Portuguese Republican National Guard, looked into the dark of the mall. The fire was still raging on their left, and the lieutenant and the woman had vanished. The hall was getting quieter as the subs had retreated into the shadows and the wounded died. He looked back at his little group, the group he’d vowed to save. There was his friend Palma, the tall guardsman, the paratrooper with the machine gun and the other one injured. And, of course, the dead one.

‘We need to go.’ Said Palma. ‘We’re not in a good spot, here.’

Morales, the paratrooper, looked at him. ‘I need help to carry my two guys.’

Surprised, Palma reacted. ‘What do you mean, two? That guy is dead. We can’t carry him.’

Morales tensed up. ‘I’m not leaving him behind.’

Palma retorted: ‘Are you crazy? We can barely carry the wounded guy! You want to die here?’

But Morales wasn’t able to be reasonable at that point. The idea of his buddy being eaten by the sick that night was too much for him. He stepped up to Palma and seemed to increase in volume. Lima intervened. ‘Wait. Wait a second. Wait here a second.’

Lima ran into the supermarket and came back, pushing a shopping cart. He didn’t have to say anything. Morales and Palma exchanged glances and then they picked up Flint’s body and put him in the cart while Lima helped a dazed Owens get back on his feet. Morales and Palma looked at the injured man, who immediately pushed back. ‘You want me to climb on top of Flint’s body? No fucking way!’

‘Shut up!’ Said Morales. ‘We can’t fucking drag two carts. Flint would understand. Just get over here, Owens.’

Morales and Lima picked the man up while Palma grabbed the cart. They put Owens on top of his buddy’s body and Morales passed him his rifle, which the man cocked, ready for everything.

‘How’s everybody’s ammo?’ Asked Corporal Lima.

Morales winced. ‘Not great.’ Lima looked at Palma, who raised a finger, showing he had only one clip left on his rifle. Lima sighed and nodded. He didn’t have more than a fresh magazine on him, either.

‘Okay.’ He said. ‘We’re going that way, through the side corridor. I’m sure the Black Cats will try to flank us, but they’ll have to come down through the next escalator or the stairs coming through there. So our best bet is the side corridor. Palma, push the cart, we need the machine-gun ready. Please stay as quiet as you can.’

Lima raised his G36 and went ahead. He honestly didn’t think they had a chance in Hell of making it—and for a fleeting second, he actually considered finding a way out for him and his buddy Palma, abandoning the Americans. But he immediately discarded the feeling. He had committed himself to take the paratroopers out of there, and that’s what he was going to do. If this was his time to join his family in the afterlife, there were worse ways to go than as a hero, helping American paratroopers.
